When you think of healthy skin, you may first think of any number of expensive lotions and creams available at your local drug store. And you’re not alone. The U.S. cosmetics industry totaled over $32 billion dollars in annual revenue from 2004, making this a rich business. In addition to outward treatments, you should also think inward; the food and drink that you consume affects your skin.

Here are the top five dietary recommendations:

Green tea: This timeless beverage has many health benefits. The antioxidants contained protect your cell membranes, thus decreasing your risk of sunburn and (more importantly) skin cancer.

Salmon: Reel in some fish for dinner tonight. Salmon, specifically, contains Omega-3 fatty acids … these help with your body’s nutrient absorption process.

Blueberries: Truly one of Mother Nature’s marvels, blueberries contain various vitamins, fiber and riboflavin as well as active antioxidants.

Carrots: Not only are carrots are a healthy snack between meals, they also keep your skin moist. This is due to the high amount of Vitamin A contained within carrots.

Water: Like carrots, water (in ample amounts) also works to keep your skin moist and smooth. Carry a water bottle with you everywhere.
